The Seattle Great Wheel at Pier 57 on Elliott Bay is lit up orange on April 1. The giant Ferris wheel is 175 feet high, and it became the tallest Ferris wheel on the west coast when it opened in June 2012. The wheel has 42 enclosed gondolas. The Seattle skyline is taking on an orange hue this April as several city landmarks and prominent buildings are lit with orange lights in celebration and support of Obliteride, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s annual three-day bicycling and fundraising event.
Last year’s ride raised nearly $2 million for cancer research, and organizers hope to best that this coming August.
“It’s been remarkable to see the Puget Sound region get behind this cause and we look forward to even more participation, support and impact in 2014,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s Executive Director.
Some other Seattle features that will go orange throughout April include the PEMCO building, University Village, Union Square, the REI indoor climbing rock, Zymogenetics, the Westin Towers and Skanska’s construction cranes around south Lake Union.
