Fred Hutch Cancer Prevention Program leader lauded by ASPO

The American Society of Preventive Oncology presented Dr. Polly Newcomb, head of the Cancer Prevention Program in the Public Health Sciences Division, with a Distinguished Achievement Award on March 10 during its annual meeting in Memphis, Tenn.
 
The award honors Newcomb's cancer research and her mentoring of junior investigators for more than 20 years. She has served on many ASPO committees and chaired sessions and presented research findings at its conferences.

Newcomb, who is also a research professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington's School of Public Health and a senior scientist at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, spoke at ASPO's meeting about the need for new approaches to cancer prevention.

"I have been a member of ASPO almost from its inception. Receiving this award is a great honor," Newcomb said. "I also feel it acknowledges the contributions of the many exceptional mentors, colleagues, students and fellows with whom I have had the privilege and joy of working with over the years."

ASPO is a multi-disciplinary society committed to serving as an advocate for cancer prevention and control research through a variety of professional education activities.
