Appelbaum wins ASCO Statesman Award

The American Society of Clinical Oncology recently selected Dr. Fred Appelbaum, director of the Hutchinson Center's Clinical Research Division and executive director and president of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, to receive a Statesman Award. This is the first year for the award, created to recognize ASCO founders, presidents and board members. Appelbaum served on the organization's board of directors from 1990 to 1993, as well as various ASCO committees.

Appelbaum will accept the honor on June 4 at the society's annual meeting in Chicago. ASCO's yearly gathering is one of the premier educational and scientific events in the oncology community. The 2006 conference attracted more than 29,000 attendees from around the world.

As the leading professional organization for physicians who treat people with cancer, ASCO aims to improve cancer care and prevention and represents all oncology disciplines and subspecialties.
