Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Resource Development

Providing Highly-Defined Cell Populations to Further Hematologic Research

As a lab within the Cooperative Center of Excellence in Hematology (CCEH) at Fred Hutch, Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing is recognized as a leader in the field of acquisition, analysis, and enrichment of normal hematopoietic cells, this facility provides well defined and highly purified populations of cells to support the research of both internal and external investigators.

40+

Years Experience
For years we have successfully defined and purified cell populations to support research.

5M+

Aliquots of cells
We maintain an inventory of millions of enriched CD34 positive cells available for projects.

50+

Studies Supported
Our team has provided cells for studies to Fred Hutch and external researchers.

24/7

Blood Cell Analysis
Our services are available to researchers 24 hours a day every day of the week.

Types of Cells Available

Hematopoietic Cells

We collect and enrich subpopulations of hematopoietic cells.

Purified Donor Cells

We supply purified CD34 positive cells from healthy donors.

Blood & Bone Marrow Products

We provide mobilized or non-mobilized peripheral blood cells (PBC) and bone marrow (BM) products.

Blood Cell Analysis

Complete blood counts (CBCs with +/- differential) are performed using an automated hematology analyzer, the Siemens Advia 2120i Hematology System, with multispecies package (humans and animals). It permits high throughput accurate assessment of 23 hematologic parameters for research purposes only.

This service includes:

  1. Accurate white blood cell, red blood cell and platelet counts.
  2. Comprehensive assessment of red blood cell, white blood cell and platelet indices.
  3. Automated differential and animal species- specific validated hematologic parameters.
  4. CBC services include a manual peripheral blood smear for assessment of manual leukocyte differential, and erythrocyte and platelet morphology.

This service is available 7 days per week including weekends and holidays, limited hours during weekends and holidays.

User fees are designed simply to recover the direct supply costs associated with the procedure. Examples of certain user fee charges are listed below; other functions are available upon request.

Cost Per Sample:

  • CBC with differential (review of blood smear included) $18
  • CBC without differntial $15
  • Cell count (hematopoietic cells per unit volume) $15
  • Bone marrow/apheresis product cell count with differential $18
  • CBC with differntial and reticulocyte count $22

Colony Forming Assay and Flow

The Hematopoetic Cell Procurement and Processing core can perform up to 4-color flow cytometry staining and analyses, as well as in-vitro colony-forming assays on research specimens.

Processing Cells

The Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing Core can process normal donor, patient and animal specimens for cell enrichment and/or depletion using small-scale Miltenyi AutoMACS or larger-scale CliniMACS magnetic bead technology.

Types of selection options include CD34 progenitor/stem cells, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD25, CD45RA+/- naïve, memory, or regulatory T-cell subsets, CD14 monocyte/dendritic cells, CD19, CD20, CD22 B-cells, and CD3-depleted/CD56+ NK-cells. Other types of enrichment/depletion procedures are available under special request. Selected cells can be provided fresh or cryopreserved.

Products

Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Cell (PBC) Components

The CCEH Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing Core maintains and gives access to a Repository of Cryopreserved Specimens consisting of large quantities of PBC components obtained from normal donors or patients with a variety of malignancies and limited quantities of normal bone marrow.

Also available are freshly donated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and/or G-CSF mobilized peripheral blood cells (PBC), which are acquired through our healthy adult donor volunteer recruitment program.

Learn more information about the donor program.

CD34+ Cells

We maintain an inventory of more than 400 vials of enriched 5-10 million CD34 positive cells collected from approximately 3-4 healthy donors each month.
