Experienced staff supporting researchers and study participants

The Fred Hutch Prevention Center is a state-of-the-art exercise facility, nutrition laboratory and clinical environment available to Hutch researchers and their partners engaged in population-based research. Participants for a number of Hutch studies are seen at the Center.

The Prevention Center includes a research clinic that supports clinical trials and other prevention-oriented clinical studies, a human nutrition laboratory that supports feeding studies, and an exercise research center  that provides exercise testing and training.

We are staffed by highly skilled personnel including physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, phlebotomists, research nutritionists, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, laboratory technicians and other administrative, clinical and medical personnel.

Research Clinic

The research clinic is used by Fred Hutch investigators conducting studies that include interviews, collecting medical history, performing physical exams and obtaining biospecimens. A trained and experienced technician is available to support the research team to perform medical assessments.

The Prevention Center features an on-site pharmacy for the storage of study medications to be distributed to study participants. Other staff is available to assist with procedures, blood draws, interviewing and other services such as bone density determinations and total body compositions. All services are provided according to study protocols in a precise and consistent manner.

A number of Hutch researchers conduct studies addressing the relationship between cancer and nutrition, diet and lifestyle factors. Many of thes studies include specialized diets. To ensure quality, meals are prepared in a custom designed, fully equipped commercial-grade kitchen and are served in a full-service dining room for on-site study meals or packaged for takeout. Our experienced staff provides the services needed to carry out controlled human feeding studies and support in the conduct of the studies. This includes study menu design, recipe development, food preparation, packaging and delivery or on-site meal service and study participant management.

Fred Hutch researchers know that exercise can also play a key role in preventing cancer. They are conducting studies to better understand the triggers that cause cancer while helping people adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce risk.

Participants of select studies have access to a state-of-the-art exercise research facility that includes treadmills, recumbent and upright bikes, elliptical trainers, rowing ergometers and strength training equipment. Locker and shower facilities are provided.

Experienced staff work with researchers to track participants using some of the latest technology such as a MGC Diagnostics Pulmonary Exercise System with Combined 12-Lead ECG for breath-by-breath testing. Education activities are held in a large multi-purpose room.
