Hematology-Oncology

“I want to develop a partnership that recognizes each patient as an active participant in their care. I aim to balance evidence-based medicine with a deep appreciation for individual needs and circumstances.”

— Dwight

What brought you to oncology?

I was drawn to the field of oncology because of its complexity and my passion for helping people. Treating cancer continues to evolve rapidly as we develop deeper understanding and increase the number of new therapies.

Like many people, I have had several loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer. When I was in high school, my mother relocated across the country to be a primary caregiver for my aunt during her treatment for breast cancer, and I experienced firsthand how cancer changes patients’ lives. Today, my goal is to not only check in with patients but also with their caregivers to identify opportunities where our team can help.

Do you have any personal anecdotes or stories you’d like to share?

I volunteer as a medic on week-long outdoor adventure camps for cancer survivors in the mountains of Colorado. One summer, I discovered one of the campers was a patient of mine who’d had leukemia twice and received two blood and marrow transplants. We spent the week rafting the mighty Colorado river, horseback riding, paddleboarding and going on sunrise hikes. It was such a privilege to see her thriving beyond her diagnosis and getting to experience the outdoors after being isolated for so long after transplant. It is a great reminder of why we provide high-quality care — to help patients get back out there.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
