Nephrology
Cancer and Organ Transplant
What gives me satisfaction in my clinical work is meeting people where they are. I try to find a personalized solution to optimize each patient’s treatment so they can go on and live their lives. It’s the combination of challenges that are intriguing. Like Albert Einstein said, rather than trying to be a person of success, try to be a person of value. I celebrate helping a patient get back to the garden, out for a bike ride or to visit a loved one they thought they’d never see again. We’ve helped patients who have had multiple transplants and survived resistant cancers, and they’re headed back to work and caring for their children.
When I was young my parents taught me the concept of being of service to others in the midst of making meaning out of work and life. At the same time, I developed a curiosity and passion around how important the immune system is for us at a fundamental level. There's a coalescence of all this within the work I get to do, getting to know patients while trying to optimize their lives.
Nephrology and Organ Transplant
I lead the Comprehensive Cancer and Organ Transplant Consult Clinic where patients meet with world-class cancer specialists and organ transplant experts. This multidisciplinary approach addresses the complicated questions surrounding immunosuppression, transplant care and cancer therapy. I also direct the Center for Innovations in Cancer & Transplant, a related research center that is focused on understanding and solving the significant challenges faced by this high risk patient group. Together, we can improve each person’s life now and elevate future generations.
