About

Dr. Stephanie Schaub is a board‑certified radiation oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. She specializes in treating pediatric cancers, soft tissue sarcomas and primary bone tumors using advanced radiation techniques.

Background

Dr. Schaub cares for patients with pediatric cancers and sarcomas. She also treats adults with soft tissue sarcomas, primary bone tumors and metastatic cancer. In her clinical role, she serves as a bridge between pediatric and adult sarcoma care, working to advance treatment approaches in both settings.

Her clinical expertise spans several advanced radiation therapies, including proton therapy, intraoperative radiation therapy, and stereotactic body radiation therapy. She is committed to patient‑centered, team‑based care for people with rare and complex cancers.

Dr. Schaub’s research is driven by the goal of improving clinical outcomes while decreasing treatment‑related toxicities. Her interests include identifying noninvasive biomarkers — such as those found through imaging or blood samples — that can help predict how a cancer will behave or how a patient may respond to treatment. She also studies functional imaging, which looks at how organs and tissues work, to help guide radiation planning. In addition, she conducts clinical trials for patients with sarcoma and pediatric cancers, with the aim of personalizing treatment to achieve a cure or improve quality of life while minimizing side effects.

Area of Clinical Practice
Soft tissue sarcomas and primary bone tumors, pediatric cancers, metastatic cancer

“I find it incredibly rewarding to connect with each patient along with their families and support systems. This allows me to truly understand how our therapies can impact peoples’ lives, so we can work together to find sustainable solutions that help people thrive during treatment.”

— Dr. Schaub

What brought you to oncology?

Cancer treatment is truly a team sport, and I’m able to collaborate with experts across many disciplines, often during individual patient visits. We work together to make sure you feel supported throughout every step of patient care even into survivorship. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a patient years later, thriving and living their best life. It's a privilege to witness the immense strength of each individual. Being a part of the moments where patients make clear and thoughtful choices with the support of their loved ones is what makes this career so meaningful.

How do you approach providing patient care?

There can be many different pathways to treat cancer. It is my privilege to work with each person and their loved ones to find the path that best aligns with their values, goals, current challenges and worries about the future. I always strive to explain the reasoning behind my recommendations, including why I think a certain type of radiation may be optimal for you or why there is no clear role for radiation at this time. I believe in forming the kind of patient-physician alliance where we’re on a first-name basis and you feel comfortable asking any question.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
