About

Dr. Christopher D. Blosser is a board-certified physician and researcher specializing in kidney disease and organ transplant care for people with cancer at Fred Hutch.

Background

Dr. Blosser is a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and medical director of the Cancer and Organ Transplant Clinic (COTC). He cares for patients who are navigating a cancer diagnosis and kidney disease, which can especially complicate organ transplantation.

Dr. Blosser’s clinical work focuses on the complex intersection of cancer, organ transplantation and immunosuppression (medications that lower the immune system’s activity to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ). He leads the COTC, a group of cancer and organ transplant experts, whose team approach helps address the challenging questions of this complex intersection with the goal of providing coordinated care.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Blosser directs the Center for Innovations in Cancer & Transplant, a related research center dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique medical and quality-of-life challenges faced by patients living with both cancer and an organ transplant. His research interests include improving adherence to medical care and medications, including the use of media technologies.

Dr. Blosser has more than 20 years of clinical experience in nephrology and transplant medicine. He is the past chair of the American Society of Transplantation Kidney/Pancreas Advisory Council and serves on the organization’s Transplant Research Network organizing committee. He also serves as an associate editor for the American Journal of Transplantation. He has contributed to multiple publications and has more than 40 citations.

Area of Clinical Practice
Nephrology and organ transplant

“I was inspired to start the Comprehensive Cancer and Organ Transplant Consult Clinic by the need and ability to address transplant patients’ challenges with cancer. This is a new concept in multidisciplinary care - To address each person’s situation, we bring together oncologists for their cancer and specialists for their organ transplant. We meet with the patient to address their questions and their goals; nobody receives a cookie-cutter solution. Our goal is that the patient and everyone on the care team are aligned.”

— Dr. Blosser

How would you describe your approach to care?

What gives me satisfaction in my clinical work is meeting people where they are. I try to find a personalized solution to optimize each patient’s treatment so they can go on and live their lives. It’s the combination of challenges that are intriguing. Like Albert Einstein said, rather than trying to be a person of success, try to be a person of value. I celebrate helping a patient get back to the garden, out for a bike ride or to visit a loved one they thought they’d never see again. We’ve helped patients who have had multiple transplants and survived resistant cancers, and they’re headed back to work and caring for their children.

Why did you choose to pursue research and medicine?

When I was young, my parents taught me the concept of being of service to others to make meaning out of work and life. At the same time, I developed a curiosity and passion around how important the immune system is for us at a fundamental level. There's a coalescence of all this within the work I get to do, getting to know patients while trying to optimize their lives.

While I am a physician-scientist with expertise in kidney and transplant care, I am also a son, father and other roles. My personal experiences shape my approach to care for each patient as an entire person.

We all have many stories that reflect our lives. I have supported my mother through kidney failure and transplant, and later my father through lymphoma. I want to get to know every patient as a whole person. This helps me tailor my interactions and care and deepens my commitment to achieving our shared goals.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians.
