Overbaugh wins scientific leadership award

The Human Biology Division’s Dr. Julie Overbaugh is the recipient of the 2011 Marion Spencer Fay Award from Drexel University College of Medicine’s Institute for Women's Health and Leadership.

This national award, now in its 48th year, is given annually to an outstanding female physician and/or scientist who has made an exceptionally significant contribution to health care as a practitioner, medical educator, administrator and/or research scientist and who exhibits significant future potential.

Overbaugh was chosen because of her unique contributions in increasing understanding of HIV transmission and pathogenesis, her leadership in the treatment of and prevention strategies for infected women in the developing world, her pioneering research collaboration in Kenya and her extensive mentoring activities.

Overbaugh receives the award, a $10,000 honorarium to support her work, and delivers a lecture, "Taking the Leap: A Basic Scientist’s Journey into Interdisciplinary, International HIV Research," on Oct. 27 in Philadelphia in conjunction with Drexel’s annual Sex and Gender Research Forum.
