Eligibility & Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Hematology‐Oncology Fellowship Program (ACGME #1555413151). The majority of our fellows elect to train for three years in both hematology and medical oncology, leading to board eligibility in both subspecialties; however, the program is flexible and will consider candidates who are seeking training in the separate subspecialties of either medical oncology or hematology. The program also offers training in the ABIM Research Pathway.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Completed or currently enrolled in an Internal Medicine Residency program accredited by ACGME, ACGME-I, RCPSC, or CFPC, or an AOA-approved internal medicine program
  • Passing scores on all USMLE Step and/or COMLEX Level Exams
  • Commitment to a career in academic medicine
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residence by the NRMP rank order list deadline: July 19, 2023

NOTE: DUE TO THE NATURE OF FELLOWSHIP FUNDING, WE CANNOT CONSIDER APPLICATIONS FROM H1-B AND J-1 VISA HOLDERS.

Required Application Materials

  • Personal Statement: Please limit your thoughts to around one page, prioritizing a brief but clear explanation of your areas of clinical interest, research focus, scholarly aspirations and related background. We value clarity on the type of research you would like to do, career development opportunities and disease groups of interest. When relevant, our program also values short narratives related to overcoming adversity and championing equity.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation:
    1. One from your Residency Program Director or Chief of Medicine in the hospital of your residency program
    2. At least two additional letters from faculty or professional staff of your medical school or hospitals where you have worked
  • Medical School Dean’s letter of reference
  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE and/or COMLEX Scores

Please be sure all materials requested above are part of your ERAS file by July 19, 2023. Incomplete applications (i.e., missing letters of reference or transcripts) will not be forwarded to the application review committee until complete.

What to Expect on Interview Day

As of June, 2023, we anticipate that our interviews will once again be online. Please expect interview days to start at 7:00 AM Pacific Time with an opening informational session, followed by a series of one-to-one interviews and breaks until noon. At that point we will have a brief Q&A if there is interest and then adjourn. Follow-up interviews and conversations may be scheduled for the afternoon depending on your areas of interest. The evening prior to your interview day there will be a social event with our current fellows. This will be an opportunity to ask questions, get to know our community, and hear more about why people chose to be here.
