Eligibility & Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Hematology‐Oncology Fellowship Program (ACGME #1555413151). The majority of our fellows elect to train for three years in both hematology and medical oncology, leading to board eligibility in both subspecialties; however, the program is flexible and will consider candidates who are seeking training in the separate subspecialties of either medical oncology or hematology. The program also offers training in the ABIM Research Pathway.

The application process can be complicated. To help, ERAS has provided Tools and Worksheets for Fellowship Applicants.

Application Timeline & Deadline

We ask applicants to have all of their materials available in ERAS at the time that they become available to programs, typically the third Wednesday in July.

Interview Dates

Interviews for candidates beginning fellowship in July 2026 are complete.  Please check back for interview dates for candidates beginning fellowship in July 2027. We typically offer one interview day per week from early September through late October each year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Completed or currently enrolled in an Internal Medicine Residency program accredited by ACGME, ACGME-I, RCPSC, or CFPC, or an AOA-approved internal medicine program
  • Passing scores on all USMLE Step and/or COMLEX Level Exams
  • Commitment to a career in academic medicine
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residence by the NRMP rank order list deadline.

Please Note: Funding for our fellowship program prohibits us from sponsoring J1 and H1-B visas in most cases.

Applicants requiring visa sponsorship who have an explicit interest and background in classical hematology may be eligible. Please contact Paul Ford (pford@fredhutch.org) for more information.

Our fellows are employees of the University of Washington. The University of Washington is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and welcoming community for all. As an equal opportunity employer, the University considers applicants for employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, citizenship, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, disability, or veteran status consistent with UW Executive Order No. 81.

Application Materials

  • Program Signals: Our program will review applicant signals and factor them into our overall decision-making process, along with the clarity of your personal statement, academic and clinical background, and letters of recommendation.
  • Personal Statement: Please limit your thoughts to around one page, prioritizing a brief but clear explanation of your areas of clinical interest, research focus, scholarly aspirations and related background. We value clarity on the type of research you would like to do, career development opportunities and disease groups of interest.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation:
    1. One from your Residency Program Director or Chief of Medicine in the hospital of your residency program
    2. At least two additional letters from faculty or professional staff of your medical school or hospitals where you have worked
  • Medical School Dean’s letter of reference
  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE and/or COMLEX Scores

Please be sure all materials requested above are part of your ERAS file by the time it becomes available for program review. Incomplete applications (i.e., missing letters of reference or transcripts) will not be forwarded to the application review committee until complete.
