Surgery is the most common treatment for sarcoma. For some people, it may cure the disease. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy or both may be given before or after surgery. This helps reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
Our sarcoma patients have their surgeries done by UW Medicine surgeons who provide care at both Fred Hutch Cancer Center and UW Medical Center – Montlake.
Sarcoma Care Tailored to You
You and your family are our top priority. At Fred Hutch Cancer Center, we offer comprehensive and compassionate care — personalized to you. You'll have access to the latest treatment options, clinical trials and supportive care services.
Type of Sarcoma Surgery
When possible, we use minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is performed through small "keyhole" incisions.
The type of surgery your Fred Hutch physician recommends will depend on many factors, such as:
- The location and size of your tumor
- The tumor grade
- The subtype of the sarcoma
- How close the tumor is to major nerves and blood vessels
- Your overall health
- Whether removing the tumor will leave the affected limb or organ with enough function to be useful
- If you have already had radiation or other surgeries in that same area
During and After Sarcoma Surgery
During surgery, intraoperative ultrasound helps our surgeons see the borders of your tumor more clearly. This allows them to remove the whole tumor while saving healthy tissues and structures nearby. After your surgery, your care team follows evidence-based guidelines to improve your recovery.
