The Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (OCOE) works to improve health outcomes and address cancer health disparities through authentic relationships, advocacy, and collaboration. This includes community-based research, resource support, and cancer prevention education informed by community-determined needs. The OCOE team works to build community partnerships across Washington State (WA).

Better Outcomes For Everybody
Our mission is better outcomes for everybody. We recognize that underrepresented communities shoulder an unequal and unjust burden of cancer. Our vision is to address and reduce cancer health disparities in WA through community partnerships, health education, and cancer research.
We have offices throughout Washington located in Seattle, Sunnyside, and Spokane.

Our OCOE team members work with community partners and researchers across Washington State.
OCOE Strategic Goals
Define and Continuously Monitor the Cancer Burden in Washington State
We conduct regular qualitative and quantitative Community Health Assessments to help us identify community concerns and inform strategies to address cancer burden, needs, and priorities.
Use an Equitable, Bidirectional Approach to Implement Education, Programs and Policies to Reduce the Cancer Burden in WA
We foster relationships, build trust, and work collaboratively with community-based organizations and tribes in WA to address priorities for cancer prevention programs and policies.
Facilitate Research Relevant to the Catchment Area to Reduce the Burden of Cancer, Including Engaging WA Communities with Consortium Researchers
We facilitate mutually transformative and beneficial collaborations by providing resources and connections for community partners to engage in research that is meaningful and relevant to their communities, and supporting researchers interested in community-engaged research.
Continue and Expand Cancer Research in High Need Areas Beyond WA.
We build relationships and collaborations with partners outside of WA to facilitate programs that build on community strengths, strategies, and goals.

Community Health Assessment (CHA)
In the 2025 Community Health Assessment Report, we explore social determinants of health as contributors to the disproportionate burden of cancer in WA. We also identify community strengths, assets, barriers and needs that impact access to cancer care and health outcomes for individuals across WA. This CHA presents ideas for how we can create improved health outcomes for all communities across WA. The CHA is used to: 1) inform our research priorities in the coming years, 2) guide our efforts to develop resources for the community, and 3) make our services more accessible.
Success Through Community Partnerships
Our team hosts three community coalitions across WA. By highlighting and sharing regional community feedback and priorities, coalitions support sustainable cancer care programs and build capacity for research collaboration. Together, we work toward listening to community voices, experiences, and expertise to reduce cancer disparities for residents in WA.
