Funding Support to Enhance Training
Trainees in the Basic Sciences Division can receive funding to attend a meeting or workshop, offset the shortfall of a fellowship, obtain professional help with grant writing, or for any other activity that will enrich their training.
To celebrate the legacy of an exceptional scientist and mentor, the family of former Basic Sciences faculty member, Meng-Chao Yao, created this fund to support trainees in the Basic Sciences Division.
We are honored and grateful for their generous donation and for carrying on Meng-Chao's legacy of caring mentorship and strong support for future generations of scientists.

Applications Open Quarterly
Apply by Jan. 15, April 15, July 15, or Oct. 15 (exceptions can be made for time-sensitive requests).
- Write a paragraph identifying the activity, the money required, and a short justification of how it will enrich your training. The fund is open to a wide variety of possible training activities and all ideas our encouraged that will improve training.

About Dr. Meng-Chao Yao
Dr. Meng-Chao Yao first joined Fred Hutch and the Basic Sciences Division in 1986. He brought a new model system to Fred Hutch, a single-celled organism called Tetrahymena, which allowed for the analysis of complex changes in DNA structure, rearrangement, and gene amplification. Using this system, he worked to understand the processes that affect genome stability, the dysregulation of which is a key cause of cancer. He would retire from Fred Hutch in 2007, where he moved to his birthplace Taipei, Taiwan, to be the director of the Institute of Molecular Biology of Academia Sinica. During this time, he regularly traveled between Taipei and Seattle.
