Hematology

Hematology-Oncology

“I have received difficult news from the perspective of a family member, and this has given me great empathy toward patients enduring the process.”

— Sydney

What brought you to oncology?

Before I became a physician assistant, I worked in an oncology infusion clinic where I formed connections with our patients and became inspired by their stories. In graduate school, I learned about the science behind a variety of hematologic and solid tumor malignancies and the diagnostic and treatment guidelines. I am passionate about this specialty because I love forming long-term relationships with patients while helping them navigate the complex management of a life-changing diagnosis.

How do you approach providing care to patients?

I want to build trusting relationships with patients and explain each person’s diagnosis and treatment options in an understandable way. I know it can be really overwhelming to process new information after receiving major news, and I always aim to communicate clearly and compassionately so patients can make informed decisions about their management options. Overall, I treat patients the way I would want my family members to be treated and hope to be an additional source of support.

A few of my loved ones have been affected by cancer, and this has deeply shaped my approach to care. I was inspired by how my family members handled their treatment with courage, and I was grateful to be there to comfort them through the process. These experiences allowed me to truly understand how a cancer diagnosis impacts patients and their families, and this is something I constantly keep in mind.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
