Medical Oncology

“It’s important to take the time required for people to be able to absorb information so they can ask meaningful questions. I appreciate sitting with patients when they are facing challenging emotions. I don't think those emotions are something we can brush aside or push through.”

What brought you to oncology and what do you value about your work?

I knew colleagues who worked in blood and marrow transplantation, so I applied for a position right out of nursing school. I spent a few years in this area and fell in love with caring for patients over the long term and oncology in general. We get to know a lot about patients and their stories over the course of treatment. I value these lasting relationships and a chance to work with people at an extremely vulnerable point in their lives. I want to truly meet them where they are.

Do you have any interesting stories to share?

A patient was quite sick when I met him, even being admitted to intensive care. He had four children, including young twins. Today, the youngest kids are now in high school, and the patient only comes to see us every three months for disease surveillance. It has been so special to connect over family and life events after he was so critically ill at our first meeting. He thanks our team every time he sees us, but of course it has been such a privilege to be a part of his care. While I hope we find a way to prevent most cancers altogether, this is an exciting and hopeful time in the field because there are so many advances every year, and more and more patients have a shot at long-term control or a cure.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Medical oncology

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner who sees patients at UW Medical Center – Northwest.

I appreciate seeing someone with a new diagnosis because, even though it’s possibly the worst day of their life, it’s my privilege to educate and guide them through what they can expect, especially in the beginning. I have also cared for a lot of people with conditions that are almost chronic. Seasoned oncology patients are also unique and are often very comfortable asking questions because they are familiar with the process – it’s not their first rodeo. I value supporting people who require a variety of levels of care.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
