Genetics

High Risk Cancer Surveillance

“I want to make sure patients understand what is going on with their medical care so they can make informed decisions. Cancer can be a traumatic event for both the person diagnosed and their family members. My personal experience has made me empathetic as a provider.”

— Lisa

What brought you to genetics and high-risk screening as a focus?

I realized we have an amazing opportunity to address cancer in earlier, more treatable stages by being able to identify individuals who are born at high risk to develop it. Once people are identified, we can offer screening options — and even prevent cancer in some cases.

What do you value about your work?

I like taking my time with patients to educate them on their personal cancer risk and options available for them. It’s important that patients understand the risks and benefits of screening/prevention so they can make informed decisions on what best fits their individual needs, both physically and emotionally. Options are not one-size-fits-all. It’s my goal to develop a plan in collaboration with patients.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
