“I want to find out a patient’s health care goals so I can help achieve them and make sure they are getting the care they want and not the care we want to give them.”

— Kira

What brought you to the blood and marrow transplant team?

I stumbled into blood and marrow transplant in my first job as a new graduate and came to love the way oncology is practiced. It takes a holistic approach — more than other areas of medicine I had witnessed — but besides that, the patients are wonderful and make my job enjoyable. Patients are my favorite part of my job. I want to know people and their stories. This is what keeps me coming to work every day.

Do you have a favorite memory of working with a patient you’d like to share?

I have been a nurse for more than 10 years, so I have had a lot of favorite moments, all for different reasons. I used to work in pediatric blood and marrow transplant and had a patient who was afraid of needles and hated having his port accessed. He wanted to feed me peanuts (which I’m allergic to ) while I accessed his port, so we would both be feeling uncomfortable. That one always makes me laugh.
