Radiology

“I see it as my challenge to meet patients wherever they are and walk in their shoes for a while. I am not in the business of telling people what to do. My role is to facilitate a person’s goals.”

— Dr. Linnau

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to be in your care?

First and foremost, I hope patients and their families feel welcome and treated with empathy. One of the barriers to providing optimal interventional radiology cancer care can be that we often don’t know the person before they come in for a procedure, so I hope to make a connection relatively quickly. Sometimes this is easy and sometimes this is a challenge, but I always aim to make things as comfortable as possible. I just need to adapt to what someone needs in that moment.

What do you value about what you do? Do you have any interesting stories to share?

I appreciate that we can make an immediate difference for a patient through interventional radiology. I also value that we get to interact with patients one-on-one. It’s human-to-human with no intermediary, which is different from my diagnostic work where I communicate through the referring provider. I get to cultivate my bedside manner and that’s important, meaningful and valuable to me as a professional and to the person seeking treatment.

A patient once informed me within five minutes of us meeting that he would like to go sailing the next weekend, so we started talking about sailboats. Later, I looked up the boat he told me he owned and it’s on my dream list now.
