Medical Oncology

“I empower patients with knowledge, encouraging self-advocacy and simply being willing to listen.”

— Caitlin

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you? What brought you to oncology?

I was inspired to work in oncology by my loved ones who have had cancer, and by the meaningful connections I made with patients during my training. Through those experiences, I have learned each person’s journey with a cancer diagnosis is unique. What works well for one person may not be best for another – I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. My goal is to really get to know each patient so that I can provide support throughout their treatment in a way that feels most comfortable to them and their families.

Any favorite memories of working with a patient you’d like to share?

I love connecting with patients, whether that means talking about their family members, pets, favorite foods, good movies or recent trips. One favorite memory involves a discussion about music with a patient. I'm a classically trained singer who has spent a lot of time performing in choirs, and I had a great conversation with a patient about his interest in choral and orchestral music. We exchanged recommendations, and when I saw him a few weeks later, he was playing the requiem I had recommended! We kept playing it in the background for the rest of our visit.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
