Radiation Oncology

“Throughout your experience with cancer care, you’re likely to meet all different kinds of specialists, and sometimes they can end up being faces that you see only briefly. I aim to be a constant presence for you and your family, the person you can trust to keep your best interests at heart.”

— Dr. Pham

What do you enjoy about being a radiation oncologist?

I started off doing radiation oncology research during medical school. My undergraduate degree was in engineering, so the technical aspects of radiation oncology appealed to me — there aren’t many fields where you can take physics and apply it in a medical setting. But as I got more involved with hands-on care during my training, I liked the fact that I could spend a good amount of time with patients in the clinic, listening to their concerns, trying to address them and developing close relationships. As a radiation oncologist, there is a real opportunity to help guide people all the way through their cancer care. Serving as a navigator for patients who are just beginning the treatment process or who are in the midst of it has been very rewarding.

What would you like people to know about your approach to care?

The practice of radiation oncology is all about the individual. While there are guidelines to follow for each type and stage of cancer, every patient and their set of circumstances is different. My ultimate goal is to enable you to live your life as though you don’t have cancer, spending time with friends and family or maintaining the career that fulfills you. To do that, I want to know about your concerns and goals, so that I can help you make the best treatment decisions for you. Whatever you commit to doing, I’ll try my best to make it happen, meeting with you frequently to manage symptoms or side effects so you can complete your course of treatment.
