About

Dr. Rachel L. Yung is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who treats breast cancer and focuses on high‑risk prevention, quality of care and survivorship.

Background

Dr. Yung provides care for patients with breast cancer and individuals at high risk, with an emphasis on supporting patients throughout treatment and survivorship. An important part of her clinical practice is offering patients opportunities to participate in research as part of their care.

Dr. Yung is an active clinical researcher studying quality of care, cancer prevention, survivorship and how lifestyle factors, such as obesity, affect breast cancer treatment outcomes. She leads and contributes to clinical trials on topics ranging from the role of occupational therapy for breast cancer survivors to the use of advanced diagnostics for patients with metastatic disease (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Her research also explores ways to identify unique features of cancer cells that may improve outcomes and reduce side effects from treatments like chemotherapy and hormone therapy. S

he has been a presenter at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and the Hawaii Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual conference.

“We each have a story that has been influenced to some extent by our health — I want to hear your story.”

— Dr. Yung

Why do you practice oncology?

A diagnosis of cancer has the power to change the trajectory of a person’s life and rewrite their story. Not only are there physical changes, but also emotional and intellectual ones; beliefs can shift or suddenly become clarified. I consider it an honor to care for patients and their families during this intense period. While the science of cancer has always interested me, what drives me on a personal level is providing care that empowers people to live their best lives, whether they are facing a new diagnosis or leaving cancer in their rearview.

What do you want patients to know about working with you?

When you step into my office, above all I want you to feel seen and heard. Without bias or judgment, I will listen to your concerns, answer your questions and allay your fears the best I can. My role is to share with you the most current science-backed information and then help you and your loved ones make decisions about your care. I apply a whole-person approach, meaning I’m just as concerned with your well-being as I am with treating your disease. Cancer comes with many challenges — some known and some unexpected — and together we will work toward the best outcome.

Research Focus

Dr. Yung realizes the impact that a cancer diagnosis makes on a person's life. She feels that it is an honor to provide care to patients and their families during such an important time in their lives. "My research focuses on the effect of lifestyle on cancer, quality of care, patient reported outcomes, prevention and survivorship," she says.  In addition to the connection she feels to her patients, Dr. Yung is helping to implement new treatment options through Fred Hutch's clinical trials program. She believes that offering research opportunities to patients is an important part of the care provided at Fred Hutch. "Already in my career, I have seen amazing developments in breast cancer therapy in regards to more effective and less toxic therapies," she says. "I remain dedicated to both improving cancer outcomes and reducing side effects."
