About

Dr. Michael Schweizer is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He treats genitourinary cancers and leads research to develop new therapies, including clinical trials of high‑dose testosterone for people with advanced prostate cancer.

Background

Dr. Schweizer cares for patients with genitourinary cancers, including bladder, prostate and testicular, while leading research focused on improving treatment options for these diseases.

His research aims to develop new drugs and therapies and to move promising advances from the lab into patient care. He leads several translational clinical trials, which are studies designed to bring research discoveries into the clinic more quickly, including trials evaluating high‑dose testosterone as a treatment approach for advanced prostate cancer.

Area of Clinical Practice
Genitourinary cancers

“My goal is to provide patient care that is driven by science combined with compassion and empathy.”

— Dr. Schweizer

Why do you practice oncology?

Michael Schweizer, MD, decided to work in health care because he wanted to feel intellectually challenged in his career and, more importantly, he wanted to do something that would allow him to help people. Medicine was the perfect fit. “Early on in my training, I realized that you often see the best in people when they are faced with a cancer diagnosis,” Dr. Schweizer said. “The hope that my patients have in spite of being diagnosed with such serious illnesses is inspiring. It’s my patients’ hope that motivates me and makes me want to be a part of working toward cures.”

Dr. Schweizer’s research involves translational genitourinary cancer. “My goal is to help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with diseases like prostate cancer through developing novel drug therapies. Cancer is a formidable foe, but one that I believe we can vanquish. I hope to be a part of bringing the dream of a world without cancer into reality. I hope to see cancer cured in my lifetime.”
