About

Dr. Shauna M. McVorran is a board‑certified radiation oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. She specializes in radiation therapies for gynecologic and breast cancers.

Background

Dr. McVorran’s primary research focuses on sexual health in people receiving pelvic radiation, social determinants of health and health disparities in gynecologic malignancies and value‑based approaches to radiation treatment. A key area of her work involves dose escalation using high‑dose‑rate brachytherapy. This is a form of radiation treatment in which radioactive sources are placed directly inside or next to the tumor to deliver a precise, high dose of radiation while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue.

Her research is driven by a mission to combine the latest technology and precision medicine with deeply personal, patient‑centered care focused not only on the best outcomes, but also compassion, dignity and support.

“I want you to know I am not here just to treat your cancer, but to care for you as a whole person.”

— Dr. McVorran

What brought you to oncology?

I was drawn to radiation oncology, and especially brachytherapy for gynecologic cancers, because it allows me to combine the latest technology and precision medicine with deeply personal, patient-centered care. I believe every patient deserves not only the best possible outcomes, but also compassion, dignity and support throughout their care. I am continually inspired by my patients — their strength, perseverance and hope for the future drive me to give my best every day.

How do you approach providing patient care?

My approach to care is patient-centered, data-driven and compassionate. I want to understand you and your individual needs and goals. For me, precision in therapy goes hand-in-hand with empathy and clear communication, so patients feel supported, informed and respected throughout their care.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
