Many breast cancer patients at Fred Hutch Cancer Center receive promising therapies by taking part in clinical trials. These research studies are led by physicians and scientists from Fred Hutch and UW Medicine. They test new treatments and discover new ways to use current treatments.

We are working to answer three important questions:

  1. How can we find breast cancer earlier?
  2. How can we make treatments more effective?
  3. How can we reduce side effects to make treatment easier on patients?

We offer clinical trials for every stage of breast cancer, from early-stage disease to metastatic breast cancer. These studies evaluate a wide range of treatment options. As your care team develops your treatment plan, they will let you know about any clinical trials that may be a good fit for you. They will explain what participating would involve, why a study may be an option, and answer your questions so you can decide what feels right for you.

Breast Cancer Clinical Trials

Fred Hutch typically has over 750 active cancer clinical trials enrolling participants.

Clinical trials may allow some patients access to a promising new treatment, and help physicians and researchers learn more about a disease.

Our Areas of Breast Cancer Research

Treatment for breast cancer generally involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Hormone therapies are also commonly used with estrogen receptor-positive disease. Fred Hutch researchers are refining these longstanding treatments, where possible, to reduce side effects. Our scientists are also working to develop new targeted therapies and immunotherapies, including vaccines.

Breast cancer research at Fred Hutch is all-encompassing. Our scientists pinpoint new risk factors and improve detection. We delve into the genetic drivers of the disease, finesse current therapies and develop new ones. Our scientists strive to enhance survivorship and patient outcomes. And we work to develop curative therapies for metastatic breast cancer and reduce the health disparities and global burden of this cancer.

Early Detection, Biomarkers and Screening

Our early-detection research focuses on improving breast cancer screening and identifying new biomarkers that may help find cancer sooner. We also partner with community educators and use accessible resources, including comic books, to improve health literacy and support underserved communities.

Genetics of the Disease

Our researchers are working to pinpoint the key gene mutations in breast and other cancers. They seek to understand how these changes promote the development and progression of tumors.

Survivorship and Long-Term Side Effects

Our researchers are working to reduce the collateral damage and long-term side effects of cancer treatment. Their efforts include studying predictors of breast cancer progression and recurrence, how treatments may influence the risk of secondary cancers, and how lifestyle choices may increase quality of life and reduce risk of recurrence.

Risk Factors and Risk Reduction

Our scientists are studying factors that may affect a person’s risk of developing breast cancer, including alcohol use and sleep. They are also examining how other factors, such as birth control pill use, may affect risk in people with certain inherited genetic changes.

The goal is to better understand how genes and environmental or lifestyle factors work together to influence breast cancer risk. This research may help guide future prevention strategies.

Our epidemiologists have also studied ways people may be able to lower their breast cancer risk. Regular physical activity is recommended for overall health and may be especially important for people who have had early-stage breast cancer and want to reduce their risk of recurrence. Our researchers are exploring how exercise may affect breast cancer by studying changes in blood, biomarkers and muscle tissue before and after physical activity.

Treating Metastatic Disease

Our researchers are working to find better treatments for metastatic breast cancer, also called stage IV (4) cancer, which currently has no cure. They are studying ways to use the immune system to fight cancer, including engineered immune cells and new targeted treatments. They are also using advanced imaging and molecular testing to better identify who may benefit from effective treatments with fewer side effects. In addition, our translational research teams are studying how breast cancer spreads and how metastatic cancer cells can remain dormant in the bone marrow. This work may help us find new ways to prevent future metastases.

Their laboratory and clinical research helps advance new treatments and improve care for patients. Many of our breast cancer providers are also researchers, bringing the latest scientific discoveries directly into patient care.
