About

Dr. Jim Leng is a board-certified radiation oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who specializes in gynecologic and genitourinary cancers. He works to expand access to high-quality radiation care, including through global health efforts.

Background

Dr. Leng delivers radiation therapy, including proton therapy, to patients and works as part of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, treatment planners, therapists and supportive care professionals dedicated to providing personalized, high-quality cancer care.

He is deeply committed to the idea that every person with cancer deserves a chance at cure, regardless of where they live. As part of this commitment, he spends part of each year working in Tanzania, collaborating with international partners to improve access to and outcomes of radiation therapy in resource-limited settings.

As a researcher, Dr. Leng focuses on global health in radiation oncology. His work examines how modern cancer prevention and treatment programs can be adapted for low and middle-income countries as the global burden of cancer continues to rise. As a member of the UW Program in Global Oncology and Health Equity in Radiation Oncology, his research emphasizes brachytherapy delivery, access to care and the cost-effectiveness of radiotherapy through ongoing international partnerships. His work aims to improve equity, sustainability and outcomes in cancer care worldwide.

“Working together, my goal is to make sure you really understand your treatment options so you can feel confident in your decisions.”

— Dr. Leng

What brought you to oncology?

I have always been drawn to oncology because it is uniquely meaningful, and I find great satisfaction using the best technologies to design radiation treatments tailored to each individual. It is an extraordinary opportunity to provide care that brings clarity and comfort around the uncertainties that come with cancer.

What do you value about your work?

I am grateful every day to be entrusted with the stories and experiences of patients confronting cancer. I believe that careful listening to each person and their hopes, fears and life beyond disease is foundational to the patient-provider relationship.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
