HVTN director named vice chair of UW's global health program

Dr. Judith Wasserheit was recently named vice chair of the new University of Washington Department of Global Health. Wasserheit, director of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network and a Clinical Research Division faculty member, begins her post with Dr. King Holmes, department chair, this month.

The School of Medicine and the School of Public Health and Community Medicine jointly administer the new UW department.

"I will help translate the very exciting vision for an innovative, interdisciplinary, universitywide global-health agenda into a reality that is grounded in outstanding education, research and global-health practice programs," said Wasserheit, who is also a UW professor of medicine.

Wasserheit is a former director of the Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and was the first chief of the STD Branch of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. She has been an advisor to the World Health Organization, the World Bank, The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and the Population Council on HIV/AIDS and STD prevention.
