Fred Hutch Cancer Center - Proton Therapy

Dr. Annemarie Shepherd is a radiation oncologist, a clinical researcher and the medical director of Fred Hutch Cancer Center - Proton Therapy.

After graduating from Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr. Shepherd completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Shepherd’s research focuses on advancing radiation therapy techniques for patients with thoracic tumors. Her current efforts are concentrated on proton therapy, lung cancer, thymic tumors and understanding radiation-related toxicity and patients with inherent sensitivity to radiation. She has published extensively and written, run and led multiple clinical trials.

Dr. Shepherd has particular interest in thymic tumors, serving on the board of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group and as chair and moderator of the ITMIG Tumor Boards. She has been involved in multiple clinical thymic projects and was the principal investigator of an investigator-initiated trial looking at treating the whole pleura with intensity-modulated pleural radiation therapy (IMPRINT) using proton therapy in thymic patients with pleural metastases.

She is involved in studying the benefits of proton therapy in thoracic tumors, including understanding which patients benefit the most from this targeted technology. Patient populations of interest to Dr. Shepherd include patients who require reirradiation, those who have large radiation fields/targets, people at high risk of radiation complications and those who require post-operative radiation therapy.

Dr. Shepherd is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology.

Research Focus

Dr. Shepherd's research focuses on advancing radiation therapy techniques for patients with thoracic tumors. In lung cancer patients Dr. Shepherd is working to understand the role of post-operative radiation therapy in lung cancer patients as this treatment reduces recurrences in the lymph nodes but may have some side effects. Working to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy, with technologies such as proton therapy, may help to improve outcomes in our lung cancer patients. Dr. Shepherd is also exploring a radiation regimen called quad-shot, which is commonly used in head and neck patients, to understand the benefits of this approach in our lung cancer patients.

"The most impactful research questions arise from clinical experiences. My patients play an integral role in helping me figure out how I can advance the field in a meaningful way."
