Medical Oncology

“The physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment can be very different from person to person, and I am so grateful to play a part in supporting patients throughout their experience.”

— Anna

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

My uncle was diagnosed with a rare and highly aggressive type of thyroid cancer when I was in third grade. Unfortunately, there weren’t many treatment options, and he experienced many adverse effects. Many years later, during clinical rotations in nursing school, I became fascinated by the improved treatments available for patients. I was impressed that high-quality oncology is not just about supporting patients, but also about making sure people have the best quality of life. This opened my eyes and intensified my dedication to this career and to addressing every aspect of treatment for patients.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I believe in patient-centered care and encouraging each person to be an active participant in their care, rather than a recipient. I hope patients feel empowered to collaborate with me while we share in a decision-making process that also includes their family, friends and community. I aim to maintain an open line of communication from the start, show empathy and compassion, and be responsive and timely.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
