Neuro-Oncology

Neurology

“Patients diagnosed with brain cancer are navigating some of the most emotionally and medically complex moments of their lives. I was drawn to both the responsibility and privilege of guiding you and your family through these challenging times.”

— Dr. Lanman

How do you approach providing patient care?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach in neuro-oncology. I strive to offer the right treatment for the right patient at the right time, carefully balancing evidence-based risks and benefits of each strategy. This requires not only clinical expertise but also a deep understanding of the individual behind the diagnosis. I take time to get to know each patient and their family so we can navigate complex decisions together. I prioritize open communication and working closely with other providers, nurses, social workers and others to make sure we’re not only treating the tumor, but also fully addressing each patient’s needs at every stage of their care.

What is your favorite memory of working with a patient?

During my neuro-oncology fellowship, I cared for a young woman, a nurse, who had been diagnosed with a glioma brain tumor. We were able to offer her a newly developed targeted therapy, allowing us to delay more intensive treatments. She tolerated this medication without any side effects, her tumor shrank and she remained neurologically intact. This experience stood out to me as a success story for translational research. It illustrated how incremental advances in the lab can ultimately lead to meaningful improvements in patient care.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Brain and spinal cord cancers, IDH-mutant glioma, glioblastoma, brain metastases

I am a neuro-oncologist who sees patients at the Sloan Clinic and the Alvord Brain Tumor Center at UW Medical Center - Montlake.

Neuro-oncology is a rapidly evolving field. I am inspired by progress already made and energized by the opportunity to contribute to scientific advances that actively transform care. My clinical and preclinical research centers around optimizing treatment strategies and investigating innovative therapeutic approaches for glioma.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Publications

Many of our Fred Hutch physicians conduct ongoing research to improve standards of patient care. Their work is evaluated by other physicians and selected for publication to the United States National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world.
