Psychiatry

“We mental health professionals don't have our lives completely figured out, either. My hope is that together we can make sense of the problems and figure out what to do.”

— Terry

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

My own experience reminds me to not shy away from difficult conversations. My father had a long period of remission after successful cancer treatment. I valued the time this gave our family to be with him, but I also saw the toll treatment had taken on him. In retrospect, I realized he kept much of his struggle from us, not wanting us to worry. It must have been very isolating to do so, and I want every person facing a cancer diagnosis to have someone they can talk to about what they're going through.

How do you approach providing care to patients?

My approach begins with listening closely, paying attention and giving people the space to be heard. I want patients to feel seen and understood in each interaction. We can work as a team to solve problems if they're solvable, and if not, to find purpose in the struggle by doing what matters. My background is in general adult psychiatry, but I find deep meaning in helping patients who are facing serious health issues make sense of what they are going through and figure out how to live their best possible life. That is what drew me to Fred Hutch.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
