Hematology-Oncology

“It is my goal to develop a strong relationship with patients and their family members and loved ones. I want everyone to feel a sense of trust from our first meeting.”

— Dr. Ginsberg

What brought you to oncology?

While I was in medical school and in residency, a mentor was a hematologist-oncologist. I looked up to him and respected him deeply, and we had a great relationship, so I decided I needed to follow in his footsteps and have now been a medical oncologist for more than 30 years. What I enjoy and value most are the relationships with patients and their families and trying to help them navigate through difficult, life-changing decisions. I appreciate learning about who people are — not only about their illnesses, but also understanding where people come from, what they do and enjoy, their wishes and hopes. These are all parts of who we are that are deeper than an illness.

Do you have any personal anecdotes or stories you’d like to share?

A patient was not doing well, and we were having a conversation about his symptoms and circumstances. While we were talking things through, the topic of music came up, and he mentioned a song that he liked and had been listening to a lot lately. He was about to go home, and I was leaving the room when I realized, “Hey, I have my phone, we’re going to sit and listen to that song.” We just took those five or so minutes to listen and appreciate something we both enjoyed. It had nothing to do with his medical care, but it was care itself — human care. These are the kinds of things I value.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dieticians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
