“Being aware of what brings each patient joy in life is as crucial as providing medical care for them during their cancer experience.”

— Savannah

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 42. Being her primary caregiver throughout her treatment gave me the chance to see the empathy, compassion and intelligence of her oncology team and ultimately led me to pursue a career in caring for people with cancer. Knowing each patient and listening to their story helps determine the success of treatment. I appreciate letting each patient lead the way.

Do you have a favorite patient story to share?

I was working with a young GI oncology patient who had always wanted to visit Arches National Park in Utah. His circumstances were medically complicated and he required continuous infusions, but through coordination with several departments, we were able to arrange for him and his family to travel there. I will never forget seeing the pictures of him experiencing his dream come true.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Gastrointestinal (GI) oncology

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

I chose GI oncology because of the complexity that can occur with these types of cancers and the extra level of care many patients require to improve their quality of life and achieve control of their disease.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
