Hematology-Oncology

“I treasure the opportunity to work with people and make shared decisions. You're the captain of the ship. I'm here to advise and to guide you, but you decide on your care, and it has to fit your lifestyle.”

— Dr. Joseph

What brought you to oncology?

Three major things brought me in this direction as a physician. The first is the relationship you can build with a patient. It brings me a lot of satisfaction and joy and is a big reason why I wanted to be an oncologist. The second reason was the fantastic stories from patients and seeing them do incredible things with their lives regardless of where they are in this process. And the last part is that oncology is a rapidly changing field. So, from an academic and intellectual standpoint, it's a challenge and it keeps you on your toes. It's a place of constant learning as opposed to stagnation.

Oncology is a team effort. I truly value how people come together to take care of somebody and show compassion.

How do you approach providing patient care? What do you hope patients’ experiences are like?

I want the experience to be comforting, it’s true, but I also want it to be fun and affirming. There are a lot of sad things that happen in cancer and oncology and trying to not focus solely on that, but to also see the joy is a big, big aspect of it. I have been known to dress up for Halloween. I used to let the team decide what my outfit would be; I have been Snow White, Buzz Lightyear and more.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Solid and hematology malignancies, benign/classical hematology

I am a physician who sees patients at Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center - Northwest.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a physician. I knew helping others was important to me. In college, my mentor encouraged me to consider further study in cancer biology, and I began to explore oncology as a future career. Every relationship with each patient is so individualized.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
