Hematology-Oncology

“I was initially drawn to understanding the science behind cancer, and I learned I also appreciate how we physicians can enhance clinical research through expanding services related to cancer care in community practices.”

— Dr. Randolph

What brought you to community oncology and to Fred Hutch?

Due to my strong interest in medicine and providing patient care, my first role after fellowship training was setting up a new cancer center in a local community hospital, which also included enhancing its clinical research programs. I am very interested in how we can expand services through collaborationg with other programs and areas of expertise, such as naturopaths.

I met my spouse during my fellowship training at the University of Washington and our careers since have taken us around the country. I really appreciate being back in the Puget Sound region and having the opportunity to play a role for people facing major illness and helping them through the process. I value not only offering the latest treatments, but also paying attention to each person and their family, friends and life.

What do you value about your work?

There’s a lot of talk of physician burnout these days, and one of the antidotes I’ve heard is to try to find meaning in your work. This is not the same for everyone, of course. I have a friend who finds meaning in seeing as many patients as possible each day. I find meaning by being able to connect with people to provide substantive care. Care has a lot of different connotations, but at the most fundamental, what we do is provide care at the scientific, social and emotional level.

When I left the practice where I’d been for more than a decade, I received cards and well-wishes from patients. You never know what that little thing might be that makes a difference for a patient. A patient I’d worked with for a long time gave me a card with a message, “Thank you for letting me be me.” That was very meaningful, and it’s what I try to always do with each patient.
