Hematology-Oncology

“When I see a patient, I am not only thinking about what treatment I can give someone. I am also thinking about palliative aspects that can help better control your symptoms so you can be treated longer and avoid complications.”

— Dr. Thakur

What brought you to oncology?

I focused on oncology because treatment options for all cancers are evolving so rapidly. I also had an incredible mentor who specializes in myeloma during my training. That helped me develop a passion for this field and gave me an appreciation for multiple perspectives, including from patients and their families and from research and scientific perspectives.

My interest in palliative care grew from the privilege of meeting patients and their families at some of the worst times in their life when they might be handed a new diagnosis or learn of a relapse. As a physician, I get to meet patients where they are, bring them hope and figure out plans so they can move forward.

How do you approach providing care to patients?

I want to give patients a realistic sense of what they should expect as they go through their treatment plans. I want to offer this perspective with honesty and emotional support that meets people where they are.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Plasma cell disorders, multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, quality of life

I am a physician who sees patients at the Sloan Clinic.

What drew me to plasma cell disorders, including illnesses like multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, is how rapidly the field has changed over the last decade. The newest treatments produce outcomes that I could only have dreamed about as a trainee.
