Radiation Oncology

“I care a lot about each patient and their experience when they see me. The science behind cancer medicine is at the core of everything we do, and I’m very passionate about that part as well.”

— Dr. Mian

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

The most important thing to me is that patients trust me and feel like they have a compassionate caregiver.

I hope they feel that I genuinely care for them and am accessible to them. When they have questions, doubts or don't understand something, I am always available to explain something to them. I want people to feel like they're involved in every aspect of their care, not like what's happening to them is a mystery.

I also want them to feel hopeful and to have the sense that no matter what the situation looks like, there are always things we can do to help.

What do you value about your work?

In recent years, I feel like I’ve finally gotten to the point in my laboratory life and career where some of the work we’re doing is moving through clinical trials and studies and into the clinic. This is enormously rewarding. We know there are gaps in what we can treat and areas where we don’t have as many options as we would like to offer patients, but we are working collaboratively to address this.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Radiation oncology, clinical research

I am a radiation oncologist and physician-scientist who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

I focus on cancers of the genitourinary tract — bladder, prostate and kidney cancers, primarily. As a physician-scientist, I study the genetics of these cancers in the lab, spending my time thinking about how cancers go from early-stage, curable forms to more aggressive and treatment-resistant ones.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Many of our Fred Hutch physicians conduct ongoing research to improve standards of patient care.
