Medical Oncology

“I want to affect patients positively, whether it’s being there as support or giving them a prescription to manage symptoms.”

— Mikka

What do you value about your work?

Long-lasting relationships with patients are important to me. I learn about my patients as people, not only about their disease. I think patients can see how much I care for them and have a sense of gratitude for what I do.

Seeing patients every two to three weeks for infusions creates a relationship. My goal is for patients to feel like I’m caring for them like a member of my own family: I will do what is right, and the care I provide will be the same quality. Because I love the job I do, I hope patients will feel the love and care I have for them.

What brought you to oncology and to Fred Hutch?

I have a passion for caring for patients when they are at their most vulnerable. I completed my fellowship here at Fred Hutch, and I was drawn to this position because I knew I would get the support I needed to grow and learn from experts in their field. I knew I made the right decision because not only do I feel supported, I am treated equally among my colleagues. Having all these resources at my fingertips is an amazing thing, as well.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
