Surgery

“It's a privilege to meet you during a time when life has been shaken up. It’s so humbling that you would trust me to partner with you.”

— Dr. Ju

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I really believe in relationship building and forming an active partnership. I always want my patients to be an active partner in figuring out what's right for them and the best course of action for them to take personally. To do that, we must get to know each other, and we have to trust each other. We need to build a relationship with each other. I think another component of being an active partner is making sure my patients have a solid understanding of what’s going on with them. If you don’t understand what is happening, how can you be an active partner?

What brought you to oncology?

I have been interested in going into medicine ever since I was very little. There is a big appeal to me in doing something where the heart of the profession is caring for other people.

As I got older, I became more interested in cancer care. My mom was a patient at Fred Hutch. Having a family member with a cancer diagnosis can completely upend your entire world. Being a physician who partners with a family through this time means we can impact not only the patient’s life, but the lives of all the people supporting them.
