“I value the opportunity to make sure you receive the safest, most effective transfusion support possible. Above all, I want every patient to feel seen, heard and cared for.”

— Dr. Vivek

What brought you to transfusion medicine? What do you value about it?

I started out with a strong foundation in internal medicine, where I developed an appreciation for the complex interplay of systems in our bodies and the importance of precise, timely interventions. During my training, I was drawn to the critical role that blood and its components play across nearly every medical specialty, from surgery and oncology to trauma and chronic disease management. By combining my internal medicine background with specialized training in transfusion medicine, I’m able to approach patient care holistically, understanding both the clinical context and the laboratory details that impact treatment decisions.

How do you approach providing patient care? Do you have any interesting stories to share?

My approach is centered on respect, empathy and partnership. I want patients to know that I consider it a privilege to be able to share in their lives and stories, no matter how brief or complex our interaction might be. Whether I’m supporting a patient through a critical transfusion decision or working behind the scenes to ensure the safest possible care, I approach each case with thoughtfulness and dedication.

I worked with a patient who had been a long-distance runner and now needed a hematopoietic cell transplant. He was depressed because he thought his running days were over. I told him to hang in there and not give up. A year later, I saw him again and he said he had gone on his first long run the week prior. That was a very rewarding interaction.
