Medical Oncology

“I like to help people when they are going through defining moments of their lives, whether by relieving their symptoms or just holding their hand and being present. Everything about my work is meaningful to me.”

— Luciana

What brought you to oncology?

I was a nurse in a medical surgical unit, and one day I cared for a patient who had cancer. I felt in my heart that this was my calling, so I asked to be transferred to an oncology floor and started working exclusively with patients who had cancer. I wanted to be able to further advocate for patients and help them make decisions, so I went back to school to get a master’s degree.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

What I hear from people is that they notice I have a gentle demeanor and way of speaking, so even if I am in a hurry, you can’t necessarily tell. I try to take my time and pass along this part of my personality to patients so they feel less anxious. I want to listen to what people have to say and educate them on symptoms to watch for and how to best care for themselves.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
General oncology, benign and malignant hematology

I am an advanced registered nurse practitioner who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic and UW Medical Center – Montlake.

I treat patients with a holistic perspective, asking them how they’re doing and touching on every aspect of their health, including the psychological. I am also currently seeking a doctorate with a minor in integrative health. I want to make sure we are addressing every aspect of a person’s need. I like working here because we have all the resources for patients in one place.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
