Medical Oncology

Hematology

“I appreciate providing care to patients from diverse backgrounds and who bring with them varied life experiences. I am a curious person who values learning and exploring.”

— Dr. Zhang

What brought you to oncology or to medicine in general?

I come from a family of doctors. My parents are cardiologists, so I always knew I wanted to go in a medical direction, too. After medical school, I was assigned to be a surgeon in general ophthalmology, and within a year I was doing surgeries, often very quickly, with patients being sent off to observation and recovery. I felt like I wanted to be more involved in providing direct care and have more time with patients, which brought me to ophthalmology and hematology research and clinical care in the U.S.

I also knew focusing on research would allow me to better understand the pathology of some of the conditions I saw as a surgeon, including a five-year-old with an aggressive retinal carcinoma. Through research, we can develop novel therapies for patients.

What do you value about your work?

I value providing face-to-face, personalized patient care. To me, the patient is the most important person in the room. I will do whatever I can for that person, no matter how many challenges they face. I am devoted to my patients, and I will give my time and energy to whatever they need.
