Hematology-Oncology

“Life with a major illness can feel unpredictable. I aim to empower each patient by helping them feel informed and comfortable asking questions so they can collaborate in their care.”

— Joanna

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

My mission is to be thorough in every interaction. I prioritize getting to know each patient as an individual so I can understand their values and goals. Looking at patients through this lens allows me to apply my medical expertise in a tailored manner.

A family member’s treatment for leukemia has given me greater insight into what patients and families go through— both in and out of the health care setting — and the impact a care team can have on each person’s experience. This has motivated me to make sure patients and their families always leave feeling informed and supported in their care.

What do you value about your work?

This field is special because of the relationships we build with patients. Caring for people through all the ups and downs of their journey is a privilege, and I find fulfillment in providing supportive, comforting and patient-centered care. Clinically, it is also a very exciting time to practice in the field of blood and marrow transplant because of innovative treatments that are now available.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
