Medical Oncology

“I strive to partner with my patients in their care, treat them as whole beings and support them in decision making that is in line with their goals and values.”

— Jeannette

Why do you practice oncology?

Back when Jeannette Hammond was in school, working toward a graduate degree in chemistry, she recalled feeling the “pull to work with people who would one day benefit from the science.” She started volunteering at an indigent care clinic once a week taking vital signs and weighing babies. When it comes to working with cancer patients however, Jeanette said she marvels at the power and adaptability of the human spirit. “A cancer diagnosis starts a person on a complex journey both inwardly and outwardly,” she explained. “Their care requires a partnership between the patient, family, friends and professionals from varied specialties. I am honored to do this work and strive to be a strong team member to deliver the comprehensive compassionate care our patients deserve.” Jeannette was drawn to science and intellectually she found the field of oncology to be challenging. “The tools used to treat cancer are interesting and grow out of many different scientific fields,” she said. “I hope science continues to work toward more effective and less toxic treatments.” Outside of work, Jeanette loves to spend time with her family, which means a lot of time on the soccer sidelines. She also enjoys hiking, a good dance performance and believes herself to be an urban farmer.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
