Pulmonology

“All of my research, every question I’m interested in asking, really starts with observations in patients. I really see my science as bedside-to-bench, and then ideally back from bench-to-bedside. It’s the most powerful way to do science.”

— Dr. Mayers

Why do you want to study microbial contributions to bloodstream infections, cancer and other diseases?

Everything I do in the lab is based on things I see in the clinic. My first year of clinical fellowship was when the pandemic hit. I didn’t leave the hospital for several months. Boston was in the first wave, and we just got hammered. A lot of my interest in blood infections and antibiotic resistant infections really came from my experience taking care of patients in the ICU. We got patients through COVID-19. But then numerous patients would leave the ICU and come back days later with these horrible, life-threatening infections. Dealing with those horrible outcomes and their families, that really motivated me to tackle this question.

What kind of experience do you want your patients to have under your care?

I have loved ones who have been patients here and they continuously speak to the warm environment from everyone from the parking attendants to the receptionists to the care staff. It means a lot to me to be a part of that team and to know how much love they feel for this place. It’s a deeply personal thing for me. It’s a very high bar and I expect myself to meet that bar. This place has a sterling reputation — patients love it — and it’s because of the entire group of folks who work here together to make this as loving and comfortable an experience as it can be for a terrible thing.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Pulmonary and critical care medicine

I am a board-certified physician who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic and Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center – Montlake. I treat patients with cancer who have any preexisting pulmonary condition, such as asthma, or who have any pulmonary complication from their cancer treatment. I also lead a lab that focuses on deciphering key metabolic behaviors of harmful microbes in their natural context with the ultimate goal of harnessing our discoveries for clinical benefit. I study microbial contributions to common diseases from my clinical practice, pre-malignant lung disease and lung cancer, as well as leading antimicrobial-resistance associated infections like bloodstream infections.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
