Radiology

“I’ve always enjoyed being a puzzle solver. I’m a very visual person, which is why I like radiology, because it’s all images. I am privileged to see this window into the patient; they open up to you through the image. There is a lot of patient interaction — reading the mammograms, performing breast biopsies, interacting to explain abnormal mammograms — and it's a wonderful continuum of care. For breast cancer patients, I work really closely with their surgical oncologist and their medical oncologist. When patients return for care, I get to see them year after year. It’s a long relationship, which I enjoy.”

Have you or a loved one been affected by cancer? How did that impact your outlook on cancer or your approach to care?

I had a close family member who passed away from breast cancer. They made some alternative decisions about their medical care, which fit exactly with who that person was. They chose the path that was right for them, and, in the end, we tried to honor that. I remember their journey and respect the journey of each patient. This is something patients experience and appreciate about their care at Fred Hutch.
