Surgery

“Every interaction with my patients is an opportunity to make a difference in their lives, guide them through a period of intense vulnerability.”

— Denise

What do you enjoy about working with patients who have breast cancer?

During the early 1980s, I was working as a nurse in New York City at the height of the AIDS crisis. Through this experience, I was able to witness a very dire health situation turn into one of hope, thanks to drug development and advances in clinical research. I see many similarities among the patients I worked with then and the women with breast cancer I see now: a sense of resilience and determination and a desire to build community around a shared cause. Every day, I am humbled by the grace my patients exhibit.

What is your approach to cancer treatment?

I have always enjoyed working with people, particularly those who are dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. It’s an honor to be a part of your life during this intense time. Our relationship is based on mutual trust, respect and openness, so I hope that you feel free to ask questions and bring up any concerns you have about your care at any point in the process. My role includes offering support, guidance and education while helping you maximize your potential for healing. I am your advocate, working closely with other members of your care team to ensure you have the highest quality of life possible.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
