Medical Oncology

“My focus is on patients. I feel very strongly that patients as well as their caregivers and loved ones are entitled to be educated about their disease, its management and what they can expect. Care must be tailored to each person, respecting their wishes as much as possible.”

— Dr. Chua

What brought you to Fred Hutch?

Fred Hutch has had a great reputation for decades. When I completed my residency in Boston in 1982, I was interested in a fellowship at Fred Hutch, but personal circumstances took me elsewhere. I have seen a few patients over the years who have moved to the Pacific Northwest, and I had suggested they receive care here. I strongly believe in enrollment of patients in clinical trials, because data can then be collected and shared so that we oncologists can learn more and improve care for our future patients.

Do you have any memorable experiences with patients to share?

Before I left Cincinnati, one patient reminded me how I immediately reacted to his description of some mild neurologic symptoms by telling him to stay in the room. We ordered imaging and started treating him that same day. He had chemotherapy and is doing quite well today. This just reinforces my beliefs about the importance of evaluating the patient fully, using their history as well as their recent symptoms.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch doctors. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your doctor can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes doctors, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like nutritionists, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
