What brought you to becoming a physician focused on blood and marrow and stem cell transplantation?

I chose this field because it sits at the crossroads of discovery and humanity. The science is racing ahead — new ways of preventing graft-vs.-host disease, safer regimens, and cellular therapies that a decade ago would have sounded like science fiction. But the real victories are people getting back to family dinners or weekend plans.

Equitable access to transplantation matters to me just as much as outcomes. Not everyone has the same chance of finding a donor, and that’s not acceptable. A lot of my work has been about widening access and reducing complications, so more patients from more backgrounds have a fair shot.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I see myself as a navigator, helping patients and families traverse a complex and often difficult path. While transplant relies on highly regimented protocols, I believe each plan must be individualized to reflect a patient’s own goals and expectations. Success in medicine isn’t always defined the same way by patients and physicians.

By the time people arrive at the transplantation stage, they’ve usually been through more than their fair share of difficult diagnoses, tough treatments and hard choices. My role is to help steer patients and their families through what is often the hardest stretch. I will listen, align and guide so that the treatment path honors both medical science and what matters most to the person in front of me.
